The earth began as a whirling cloud of gas that created a dense dust bowl. This contracted into a white, hot, molten ball. Over eons, a thin layer of this molten material, magma cooled into the crust we call the earth's mantle. Inside the crust, the hot, mineral rich, molten magma continues to boil and bubble creating new crystal formations.
Some crystals, such as Quartz, arise from the fiery gases and molten minerals in the earth's center. They become superheated and rise toward the surface propelled by the stresses caused by movement of huge plates on the earth's surface. As gases penetrate the crust and come in contact with solid rock, they cool and solidify. The process can take eons or may happen fast and furious. If the process happens slow or the crystal grows in a gas bubble, large crystals can form. If it's a fast process, the crystal formation is small. If there is a stop and start process occurring, such effects as phantom or self healed crystals are possible. In an exceptionally fast process, a glass like substance, such as Obsidian is formed rather than crystals.
Some crystals such as Peridot and Adventurine are created at very high temperatures from liquid magma. When gases penetrate adjoining rocks, crystals such as Topaz and Tourmaline are formed. Kunzite is a crystal that results when magma cools sufficiently for water vapor to condense into a liquid and when it penetrates fissures in surrounding rock, it cools more slowly resulting in large crystals and geodes such as Chalcedony and Amethyst. Some crystals are said to be metamorphic because they have undergone a chemical change that has reorganized the original makeup. This reorganization occurs in crystals like Garnet that is formed deep in the earth when minerals melt and recrystalize under intense pressure and extreme heat. There are other sedimentary crystals such as Calcite that form through the process of erosion. Mineralized water dripping down through rock or traveling through running water as in a river, lays down weathered material as new crystals or over time, the minerals become cemented together forming yet another crystal formation.
Whatever size, shape, form, or how the crystal formation came to be, each crystal holds within it, the ability to absorb, conserve, focus, and emit energy, especially on the electromagnetic waveband.
Some crystals such as Citrine, Kyanite, and Azeztulite are self cleansing and never need cleansing. Clear Quartz and Carnelian cleanse other crystals and are useful for delicate and fragile stones but may need cleaning themselves afterward. Other crystals should be cleansed when you buy them, after wearing or using for healing, or if given to you from someone else (even if in the form of jewelry) as it can hold their negative vibrations and pass them on to you.
Crystals that are not fragile or friable can be held under running water or immersed in salt water. As you do so, hold the intention that all negativity will be washed away and the crystal will be reenergized. Crystals that are friable such as Selenite are water soluble and should not be immersed in water. These stones can be left overnight in sea or rock salt (no water)and gently brushed the next day to remove the salt particles.
You may also place a Carnelian in a bag of tumbled stones and you will never need to cleanse them using any other method. You can place a small crystal on top of a Quartz cluster and leave it overnight. You may also smudge the crystals or pass them through the light from a candle. Visualize them surrounded by light, which purifies and re-energizes them.
If you want to choose a crystal for a specific purpose, you can go back to the healing power of crystals page and look in the directory of stones to find exactly the right one. If you have no idea what you want your crystal for but feel drawn to wear one, your date of birth is a good starting point. You may find the attributes to your birthstone crystal in the directory as well.
My favorite way to select a crystal is at random. Trust your intuition. Go to the store and handle the stones. Handle several and allow yourself to be drawn to one. The crystal that makes you tingle or speaks to you is the right one.
Crystal Programming and Dedication
Crystals need to be dedicated to the purpose for which you intend to use them. Dedicate the crystal as soon as you have cleaned it. This focuses the energy. Hold the crystal in your hands and picture light surrounding it or hold it in front of a light source. Say out loud, I dedicate this crystal to the highest good of all. May it be used in light and love. To program the crystal, hold it in your hand and let yourself be open to higher guidance. Consider the purpose for which you intend to use it. Be specific. For instance, if you are using the crystal to attract love, describe exactly what kind of love you are looking for. If for healing, be specific as to the condition and what you want to happen. Then, attune to the crystal. When you are totally in tune, say out loud I program this crystal for (your purpose). Keep the crystal in your pocket or place it in a place where you can frequently see it. You may even want to hold it two to three times a day. Repeat the programming as needed. It's best to program it several times.I hope this page on crystal formation, care, and selection has been beneficial to you and helps move you in a direction of experiencing all the benefits of connecting with crystals andgemstones. Enjoy. If interested in obtaining more information on crystals and crystal formation, I would suggest visiting Amazon. They have an excellent selection of books covering the subject in detail.
